The ultimate foundation guide

February 20, 2017

Finding the right foundation for your skin is important for your overall look. Every skin tone, texture and composition is different so you may need to try a few products until you find the right one.

When buying foundation, I usually look for a yellow tone based colour, medium to high coverage and long lasting wear. Because I frequently fake tan, my foundation colours can vary from light/medium to honey/beige. I also love my dewy, glowy foundations for day wear and matte foundations for evenings and special occasions.

So, here are my top six drugstore and high-end foundations!

Top drug store foundations:

I wear my drug store foundations when I’m spending a lot of time outdoors, going to work or everyday wear. These foundations are great coverage, look natural and blend perfectly into my skin tone!

L’Oreal True Match

This lightweight, medium coverage foundation is my absolute go-to for a day time, glowy look when I’m tanned! The colour 4.W Golden Natural matches beautifully to any Bondi Sands or Le Tan mousse that I usually use at home. This foundation comes in about 15 shades and is made to match the texture and colour of any skin seamlessly. The consistency of this foundation is super easy to work with, it blends perfectly and can be applied with a brush, beauty blender or finger. I usually blend mine out with a brush and dab it with a beauty blender for a flawless look.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless

My everyday foundation for when I want a bit more coverage! This foundation gives your skin a poreless looking finish however it doesn’t look dull like many other matte products. It’s super blendable and looks natural on the skin. Very similar to the True Match however it is more matte and very buildable for long lasting, high coverage finish! I apply this foundation with a make up brush in the colour 128 Warm Nude.

High high-end foundations:

When I buy high end foundations I look for great coverage. For some reason I feel that if I spend that much on a make up product I want it to cover everything and look like a second layer of flawless skin. I want the foundation to be ultra long lasting, not cakey, have a subtle glow and match perfectly to my skin. I’m not asking for too much, right? …

To be honest the real reason I buy high end when it comes to coverage, staying power and colour is because I haven’t been able to find anything great in the drug store variety. So please, if you have a fabulous long-lasting foundation for me, comment below! Here is my list for my top high-end foundations:

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Foundation

Currently my FAVOURITE matte, long lasting, super coverage foundation. I wear this baby for all those really special occasions, nights out and days where I need flawless skin! It’s quiet concentrated so you only need a TINY amount to blend over your face. This is very important as it took me a little while to get used to applying such a small amount and blending it out, otherwise it can look cakey. Saying that, it’s quiet versatile and can be worn with a moisterising primer for light coverage. I use colour 27 Bisque Neutral. Worth the splurge!

Estee Lauder Double Wear

This foundation has been around for a while and with good reason! It literally does not budge, no matter what! I have worn this in tropical humidity, 12 hour summer festivals, nights out and long days at work. The foundation is a perfect mixture between dry and oily and can be built up to very full coverage. It has a matte finish and I apply it with a beauty blender in the colour Tawny for an airbrushed look.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Probably the only foundation on my high-end list that’s not matte! It is lightweight and blendable and gives a glowy, youthful appearance. The coverage is buildable and the foundation appears somewhere in between of matte and dewy. It perfectly resembles your skin and looks great up close and far away. I apply this foundation with a brush or beauty blender in the colour 120 (Y245).

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

Another great option if you want a stay put, high coverage foundation that won’t fade no matter what you do! If you have any pigmentation, freckles, scars or suffer from acne, this foundation will cover it all up and give you an airbrushed finish. You won’t even need concealer! Saying that, I have heard of people dislike this foundation as it’s not as easy to blend as others but I have never had any issues. I think it all depends on your individual skin. Don’t forget that you can try the foundation with many types of primers and moisturisers to get the best effect. I apply the Lock-It foundation with a brush and a beauty blender in the colour Medium 53.
